In Ontario, the Design of Public Spaces Standard under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) specifies requirements for accessible parking spaces. These guidelines apply to organisations constructing or renovating on-street or off-street parking spaces. The aim is to ensure these spaces are accessible to visitors with disabilities who have accessible parking permits.
There are two types of accessible off-street parking spaces as per the AODA:
Type A Accessible Parking Spaces: These are wider spaces designated as "van accessible". They cater to individuals using larger mobility devices like wheelchairs or scooters, requiring more space to enter or exit their vehicles.
Type B Accessible Parking Spaces: These are standard-sized parking spaces for people who do not need extra space. This category includes individuals who do not use mobility devices or use smaller ones like canes or crutches.
Additional requirements for these parking spaces include:
Signage: Clear signage indicating the location of all accessible parking spaces is necessary. For Type A spaces, signs should specify that they are "van accessible."
Access Aisles: These spaces must have access aisles (space between parking spaces) to provide sufficient room for individuals to enter and exit their vehicles. For paved surfaces, these aisles should have high-contrast diagonal lines to indicate they are not for parking.
Number of Spaces: The number of accessible parking spaces required varies based on the total number of parking spaces in the facility. The AODA provides minimum guidelines, but organisations can choose to offer more accessible spaces.
Exceptions do exist under the standard. For example, certain types of off-street parking spaces like those for buses, delivery vehicles, police, and ambulances may not need to be accessible. Also, if the path leading to the parking spaces is not barrier-free, accessibility might not be mandatory.
Moreover, in cases where an organisation has multiple parking facilities at the same location, only one facility might need to have accessible spaces.
These guidelines are part of broader efforts to make public spaces in Ontario more accessible and inclusive for all individuals, particularly those with disabilities. For more detailed information and specific measurements or requirements, you can refer to the official AODA guidelines or the Ontario Building Code, which may also have relevant standards for accessible design.

Under the Design of Public Spaces Standard in Ontario, off-street parking facilities must comply with specific requirements for accessible parking spaces.
Here are the guidelines:
When 1 to 12 parking spaces are available in a facility, at least one accessible parking space is required, and it must be a wider "van accessible" space.
For facilities with 13 to 100 parking spaces, 4% of the total spaces must be accessible. This should include a roughly equal number of wider "van accessible" spaces and standard-width spaces.
These requirements are designed to ensure that adequate and appropriate parking is available for individuals with disabilities, enhancing accessibility in public spaces. For more detailed information, please refer to the AODA's guidelines or the Ontario Building Code.
